Summer programs at the National CancerInstitute (NCI) provide students with an opportunity to spend asummer working with NCI scientists and clinicians located on theNIH main campus in Bethesda, MD and off campus in the surroundingarea in Rockville, MD and Frederick, MD. The National CancerInstitute (NCI) is one of 27 Institutes and Centers as part of theNational Institutes of Health (NIH) and consists of almost 350principal investigators and about 1100 postdoctoral fellows andclinical fellows. The NCI conducts and supports research, training,health information dissemination, and other programs with respectto the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer,rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancerpatients and the families of cancer patients.The NCI Summer Internship Program (NCI SIP) covers a minimum ofeight weeks, with students generally arriving in May or June. CowParade North Carolina 2012 presented byWells Fargo features more than 80 life-size cow sculptures, allwhimsically transformed by regional artists, professional andamateur. The stylized cows are grazing in high-trafficked publicplaces throughout greater Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh(Triangle). In addition to the Triangle, there are cows at selectWells Fargo branches in Apex, Garner, Greenville, Fayetteville,Knightdale and Wilmington.Cows are displayed on streets, storefronts and other publicplaces, creating a free family friendly outdoor museum of cows. Thelife-sized bovines are approximately 8 feet long and 5 feet high.After transformation, the artist-rendered cows are given fancifulnames fitting of their designs. CowParade North Carolina titlesinclude: “Mootalic Cow, Handy Heifer, Sir Walter Cowleigh, andNorth Cowlina, Udderly Amazing.” CowParade North Carolina 2012presented by Wells Fargo is conservatively estimated to attractover 500,000 visitors to the Triangle during the three-monthexhibition.At the conclusion of the three-month public cow display, thecows will be sold at a live auction in January of 2013 to benefitN.C. Children’s Hospital at UNC Hospitals. The remaining bovineswill be sold via online auction.CowParade has become the largest, most successful public artevent in the world, with exhibits held in 75 cities around theworld and has been viewed by over 100,000 million people. More than10,000 local artists in those cities have produced 5,000+ signaturecows. Perhaps more impressive, CowParade has raised in excess of$30 million for its nonprofit partners in its host cities since1999. In addition, CowParade has contributed well over $3 milliondollars to artist communities around the world.
